There is a pretty special concert happening tonight at the Colony. Earl Slick and Jeff Saphin are The Eons. Gail Ann Dorsey on bass, Sterling Campbell on drums. David Bowie, who Gail, Sterling and Earl play with, is not expected to be here.

Corey Boutilier with independentfilm.com has set up pretty close to my favored spot inside base camp here at the film fest, so I thought I'd see what his deal is.....

Independentfilm.com focuses on, well, independent film. It's an online magazine that also serves as a resource for film fans looking to check out independent films. His web site has video interivews, info, etc.


I asked Corey if there was ever a director or actor he interviewed before they exploded in fame. He thought and thought and thought and he said, well, there was this film, "Once."

OKAY!!! "Once." Academy-Award. Glen Hansard. Marketa. Yes, I said. I'VE HEARD OF THEM!!!

The Utz girl

The Utz girl, that little logo lady that adorns potato chips, pretzels, etc., has been following me around for months.

First it was the barrel of pretzels at the Journal City Desk pod, then it was that monster billboard at Yankee Stadium (maybe it just SAID Utz, with no girl), and now it is a short doc called "Bodega."

This film was very funny but was also biting satire. Two guys show how shop and eat at Bodegas in the bronx, paying less than a dollar for food that is in no way healthy - Utz products, cinnamon buns, quarter water, ice cream sandwiches. But they point out that the New York Times named The Bronx as the poorest community in the nation, or maybe it was with the most poverty....from census data. And they also thank a series of NY mayors, from Kock to Bloomberg, I imagine for creating the economic conditions that allow Bodegas, where you can buy quarter water for a quarter, then get a five-cent deposit refund, can exist....

Good stuff.

Rick and Paul from WKZE

Red Hook-based WKZE is setting up to broadcast from the Colony as I write. Morning show host Rick Schneider and Sales Director and "Night Shade" host Paul Higgins are connecting wires and pushing buttons and all that nutty radio stuff they do.

Malley speaks

Malley Bragg is one of the best things on WDST. She talks movies each Tuesday morning at 8:30 with Greg Gattine and the morning folks.

She typically sees all the movies in advance and this year is campaigning for "Gospel Hill."
"I think it's one of the most beautiful, lyrical and socially relevant films. I've seen it twice."

And she'll be seeing it again this weekend.

This film is about a small town in South Carolina that was the birthplace of a civil rights activist who was murdered, 40 years prior to when the film takes place. The mystery of who shot is still unsolved although, according to Malley, the sheriff who may have some knowledge of whodunit.

More to come from Malley this weekend. She was off to take her ill dog, Wavi-Jodi, to the vet. Send the good vibes along.....

And she and Gattine will broadcast live from the film fest Saturday. I'll get you that time later.

Pressed on what other movies are worht seeing, Malley said, "There are too many too pick." But she did recommend "Idiots and Angels" and "Guest of Cindy Sherman."

See Eden or Colin Farrell impersonate Bono

I just realized that "Eden," my new favorite, tragic, depressing, sad, movie, will be playing again.....at the Rosendale Theater, Saturday, at 2:15 p.m. Gabe, one of the press folks here, who is extremely nice and helpful, tells me the filmmakers will be on hand for a q and a. I DO have lunch scheduled with Jon Voight, Colin Farrell and Ed Norton, for a kind of post-mortem on "Pride and Glory"...you know, they are looking for my critique, how they could do things better, etc.

Maybe I could reschedule, guys?


Ok. OK. All that stuff about Colin, Ed, Jon and lunch was just a big fat lie. But if I could get those guys in a room......Actually, I would ask Colin to do his impersonation of Bono from U2, which he did so hilariously a few years back on "Saturday Night Live."

Caffeine has arrived

Ok. My tea is here and the world looks a lot better. As soon as I get it together, I will have plenty to dish on "Pride and Glory," a documentary on the U.N. Security Council and thinking that I lost my WFF press credentials, then realizing that I didn't.

The WFF on WAMC

Our good friend Joe Donahue of WAMC just said on the air that this morning's "Roundtable" will feature in-depth coverage of the Woodstock Film Festival, including an interview with animator and WFF anchor Bill Plympton. What's that saying...tune in, turn on.....????

"Pride and Glory"

The acting in "Pride and Glory" last night was superb. Colin Farrell, Ed Norton, just great. But Jon Voight as the patriarch of a family of cops. Yes! Bravo. And he was even better as the DRUNK patriarch of a family of cops. But this movie had too much gore and not one, but two of those, "truth? what do you know about the truth" scenes. ho hum. recycled. I liked "Eden" much better.

WFF: Day 3

I'm up, but I'm not yet caffeinated, and I expect the gdp of the tea import industry is going to skyrocket in the next two hours because I need caffeine and lots of it. Bring it on! Please!

After getting up at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, I stayed up (barely) until 2:30 a.m. today. I was going to try to stay up for the entire 24 hours but just couldn't make it...

My first movie today is documentary shorts at 11 a.m., then I have the panel talk with Donovan, then I hope to get into the "The Edge of the World" at 5:15, then I have a super secret event that I've been invited to, that I'll get back to later. Plenty to come!
